AltaMira Press

Founded in 1995 as the humanities arm of Sage Publications, AltaMira has been a part of the Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group since August 1999. Based in Walnut Creek, California, near San Francisco, AltaMira prides itself on its innovative approach to scholarly and professional publishing.

AltaMira's publishing philosophy revolves around its selected groups of fields-- history, archaeology, anthropology, religion, sociology, environmental studies, and ethnic studies, among others--in which it tries to provide a wide variety of informational products. Thus the AltaMira list in each of these fields will include everything from introductory college textbooks to encyclopedias, from innovative scholarly monographs to books for a general audience, from academic journals to software.

AltaMira distinguishes itself by developing user-friendly guides for "cultural practitioners" in the community--museum professionals, historic preservationists, applied anthropologists, criminologists, church administrators, and environmental professionals. It has partnerhsip arrangments with numerous academic and professional societies to further this work.

The company's rapid growth and its enviable reputation in the communities it serves attest to the success of the AltaMira model.
